Michael Foust Contributor 2020 13 Feb COMMENTS In the 1956 classic movie The Ten Commandments, filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille depicted millions of Israelites crossing the desert, only to get stuck between an Egyptian army and the Red Sea, which God miraculously parted so they could survive. Many modern-day liberal scholars, though, doubt that’s the way it happened – and their disbelief has led some Christians astray. Modern-day filmmaker Tim Mahoney is one of these Christians who formerly had a crisis of faith about the biblical narrative. But instead of living a life of doubt, Mahoney set out to find archaeological evidence for the Old Testament story. His latest movie, Patterns of Evidence: The Red Sea Miracle, Part 1, will land in theaters for one night only, Feb. 18, and examine the archaeological evidence for the Israelites’ crossing of the desert. ( The Red Sea Miracle, Part 2 will appear in theaters May 5. ) Here are three reasons to watch The Red Sea Miracle: Photo courtesy: ©Tim Mahoney 1. It Will Strengthen Your Faith The Israelites’ Exodus from Egypt and the crossing of the Red Sea are well-known stories among Christians. But among many scholars, such stories are viewed with skepticism. Did the Israelites cross a massive sea that would have required a miracle from God (as depicted in movies by Cecil B. DeMille), or was the body of water far more shallow (and easily crossable by foot)? This debate also involves the route the Israelites took out of Egypt. Scholars who doubt the biblical narrative claim the Israelites couldn’t have survived a lengthy walk through the desert. They also say there likely were thousands, and not millions, of people on the journey. The Bible tells us (in Exodus 13) that God led the people out of Egypt along a “desert road toward the Red Sea. ” It is on this journey that God guided them with a “pillar of cloud” and a “pillar of fire. ” “The big miracle, some people would say, is the parting of the sea, ” Mahoney told Crosswalk. “But the other miracle is the journey – and that God provided for them. ” Mahoney travels the globe and interviews experts in both camps, but lands on the side of Scripture. Photo courtesy: ©Tim Mahoney 2. It Simplifies the Complex The Red Sea Miracle, Part 1 is the latest in a series of documentary films by Mahoney about the Old Testament narrative. In each one, he takes a complicated subject involving archaeology and ancient history and simplifies it for the average person, using plain language and graphics. “It's something that I'm called to do, ” said Mahoney, who recently screened the film at the Ark Encounter in Kentucky. In Patterns of Evidence: Exodus (2014), he examined the archaeological evidence and the timeline for the Egyptians owning and then releasing millions of Hebrew slaves. In Patterns of Evidence: The Moses Controversy (2019), he looked at the authorship of the Pentateuch (Genesis-Deuteronomy) and the question of whether Moses wrote it. The Red Sea Miracle, Part 1, examines the various routes the Israelites could have taken and which body of water could have been crossed. Red Sea Miracle, Part 2 (May 5) will spotlight the actual Red Sea miracle itself. In each film, Mahoney is searching for “patterns of evidence” that match the biblical events. “The Scriptures tell us that they're divine and that we can trust them. And I agree with that, ” Mahoney told Crosswalk, explaining his purpose behind the films. “But even with the disciples, it helped that Jesus showed up after the resurrection – even though he told them certain things were going to happen. Jesus understood that the human nature needed to sometimes see with your eyes and touch with your fingers. ” Photo courtesy: ©Tim Mahoney 3. It’s Fascinating … and Well-Done The Red Sea Miracle is like sitting in a college classroom and learning about an intriguing subject. Yet this class involves the greatest story ever told: God’s story. “Millions believe this was a supernatural act revealing God’s glory to the nations, ” the narration tells us at the beginning of the film. “Did this event take place as recorded in the Bible, and if so, where did it happen? ” Like a good college professor, Mahoney puts a little doubt in your mind before solving the puzzle. “There's a tension between a naturalistic view of the Scripture and what the scripture is actually saying, ” Mahoney told Crosswalk. Mahoney began tackling the subject when he was facing a crisis of faith. “I feel as if I have been guided providentially to information to help others, ” he said. “I'm taking people on a personal journey of discovery, but I found out that a lot of people are asking the same questions. ” Visit Related: 4 Reasons to Watch Patterns of Evidence: The Moses Controversy Photo courtesy: ©Tim Mahoney Michael Foust has covered the intersection of faith and news for 20 years. His stories have appeared in Baptist Press, Christianity Today, The Christian Post, The Leaf-Chronicle, the Toronto Star and the Knoxville News-Sentinel.

That's what investigative filmmaker Timothy Mahoney set out to discover 18 years ago and now he is ready to share what's been uncovered; a controversy between two dramatically different approaches in reading the biblical text. One approach is Egyptian, the other is Hebrew. Both will lead to two very different conclusions on the location of the Exodus crossing site and the cause of the miraculous parting of the sea. You are trying to discover things that have left no trace. No foot prints at the Exodus or the sea of Galilee for that matter 😂. The award-winning PATTERNS OF EVIDENCE film series continues with the next chapter investigating one of the greatest miracles in the Bible; Moses and the Israelites trapped at the sea by Pharaoh’s army when God miraculously parts the waters, rescuing the Israelites and destroying Pharaoh and his chariots. But is there any evidence that it really happened and if so, where? Did a mighty sea split? what secrets will be revealed? Following his first two films, The Exodus and The Moses Controversy, filmmaker Tim Mahoney returns with one of the biggest biblical documentary investigations of all time, uncovering new evidence for the EXODUS story. You won’t want to miss this faith-inspiring event. This investigation is so large that two films were required. Perth premiere of the 2-part film is on 5th April (Part 1) and 24th May (Part 2). Events start at 1:30pm, with doors open at 1:15pm. Please arrive at the venue earlier to find a suitable seat. “ I’ve worked in a ministry that deals with the Bible’s history for 30 years. So, it is rare that I get a shot of excitement when I watch a film that attempts to cover such topics. This movie genuinely surprised me. It is scholarly, but thoroughly engaging at the same time. But most of all it tries to be faithful to Scripture. One of the best documentaries I’ve seen on the Bible’s history in years. ” – Gary Bates, CEO, Creation Ministries International; The Exodus Journey Out of Egypt is One of the Most Spectacular Accounts In the Bible. But Did It Really Happen? After leaving Egypt, the Bible describes the Israelites crossing a deep sea that was miraculously split with walls of water on their right and left. When the Egyptians and their chariot force pursued, the water came crashing back down to destroy the entire army. Are miracles of this kind even possible? Skeptics contend that no evidence has ever been found for huge numbers of people crossing the wilderness or a mighty sea. Does the lack of evidence at the traditional sites mean the events didn’t happen, or might we have been looking in wrong places all along? Join Timothy Mahoney in the next chapter of the series as he retraces the steps of Moses and the Israelites, looking for answers in Patterns of Evidence: The Red Sea Miracle. Hear ideas from all sides of the debate as you journey back to the lands of the Bible in search of answers to one of the Bible’s biggest mysteries; where is the lost sea of the Exodus, and what really happened there? Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2015 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase I like French movies with subtitles because I can follow along much easier. This one is a high quality (as usual) presentation of typical French upper-class foppery in a scurrilous wife of a concert pianist, She is rich, a business woman, and very possessive of her handsome husband. He is devoted to his children from previous relationships and completely oblivious to her scheming plots to shove them aside. If you have ever seen "LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN" with Gene Tierney and Cornell Wilde, and enjoyed it, this movie is for YOU. Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2015 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase I like to see French films because I like to see how much of the French language I can understand without the subtitles. The plot for this film could never compete with Miss Marple, and the acting was laid back, but the characters who were supposed to have some chemistry didn't. I couldn't recommend it over "To Catch a Thief", "Rear Window", "Maigret", or any Hitchcock film, but then I'm spoiled. Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2015 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase Not Chabrol's finest film but a clear distillation of a sociopath wrapped in bourgeoise dress. Isabel Huppert is a an acting genius and this is reflected in her placid face which, both at one time, says very little and so very much. In "Merci" she is a black widow spider, endlessly spinning webs around her victims until she herself is psychologically undressed at which point, Chabrol's 1 1/2 hour film becomes a joke on her. Worthwhile viewing. Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2015 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase Isabelle Huppert has recently become the face of the beautiful but twisted woman. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 27, 2016 Verified Purchase I bought this as I am a fan of French actress Isabel Huppert. She always gives a stunning performance in whatever role she undertakes. Her final scene is a 'masterclass in acting' as another reviewer described it. A rather odd domestic drama with French dialogue and English subtitles. My 3-start rating is because - as a film - it doesn't really hang together for me. You often find yourself questioning why the characters behave in the way they do and some plot devices are a little too contrived. Sending feedback... Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again Report abuse 4. 0 out of 5 stars I love it - but I fully accept all the criticisms Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 2, 2008 Verified Purchase I adore this film, but at the same time I agree with many of of the negative points raised by other reviewers. Yes, the ending is rushed, the anticipated twist never quite happens, there isn't as much suspense as you would expect from Claude Chabrol...... but for all that, I love it as a window to a twisted slice of life. Looked at that way, it neither requires suspenseful build-up nor satisfactory conclusion. The acting is fantastic, the settings gorgeous and the atmosphere impeccable. Flawed but beautiful - watch it and draw your own conclusions. Report abuse 5. 0 out of 5 stars Super Chabrol, l'ambiguïté à son paroxysme! Report abuse 1. 0 out of 5 stars Utterly pointless Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 29, 2006 Verified Purchase I enjoy foreign language films, not just to improve my faltering language skills but as a blessed contrast to the usual Hollywood offerings. Idiosyncracy goes with the territory and I do occasionally wonder "what was that all about? " as the final credits roll, but this film sets a whole new standard in pointlessness. I agree with a previous reviewer; the action (such as there is) is slow, the plot implausible and the dialogue sometimes ridiculous. The lack of suspense is stupefying; you spend the whole film wondering what the final twist will be - and it turns out that there isn't one. Perhaps I have missed some subtle nuances or deeper sub-plots but I am left wondering what else I could have done with the money. 2 people found this helpful 1. 0 out of 5 stars Great film, but crappy DVD! Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 14, 2008 Verified Purchase I love Chabrol's films, and Merci Pour le Chocolate is very good. The problem is that this Artificial Eye DVD is terrible. The picture is cropped, the voices are out of sync and the subtitles are non-removable. Skip this and wait for a decent DVD-version, hopefully from a company that cares about cinema. 3 people found this helpful 5. 0 out of 5 stars A déguster, ce chocolat rempli de perversité, ce chocolat bien noir...
